Sunday Year 26 Week 9 01/31/10

In checking the list for mixed breed yearlings through week 8 I noticed that two of my yearlings made it onto the list: Romantic Fling, a yearling Arabian filly by Midnihte and out of Dark Romance from the special mixed breed broodmare sale, she ranked 11th in the 4 furlong category.

Also making the list was Stroke of Midnite by my stallion Midnight Tornado and out of the mare Ghoul. I was fortunate to pick him up on the sales page for 7K. He was 10th on the list for the mile trotter works.

You Need Your Head - 3-year-old turf route colt - After winning a small stakes last time out, trying him at a little longer in a 300K Grade 1 and a field of five. He should have a good chance to come in second. 3 56

Mixed breed racing night, a little bit of everything in this group of 23.

Big Boss - 4-year-old trot gelding - Not a real strong runner but fairly consistent. Running in a 12K allowance with a field of ten. 6 51

Blind Unicorn - 4-year-old Arabian gelding - $10 purchase. Unimpressive filler running in a 12K MSW with a field of three. 3 6

Cartecay - 3-year-old Appy gelding - Another unimpressive filler who I paid 1K for and has won me 17K filling in four races for me. Tonight he's in a 10K MSW and he's the only horse. Easy walkover win. 1 41

Comanche Star - 4-year-old Paint filly - $10 purchase. Yet another unimpressive filler running in a sponsored 10K NW3 claimer, three horse field and a purse of 10K.

Combat Rock - 6-year-old Arabian colt - Fairly consistent but is probably outmatched in this field. Running in an 80K listed stakes, seven horse field. Some real good horses here. 4 71

Cracklin Rosie - 3-year-old QH filly - Not a streak of lightning but she holds her own, usually. She's in a 50K listed stakes, three horse field. There's a chance she might come in second. 2 60

Cresceus - 6-year-old trot gelding - Unimpressive trotter that throws in a good effort every once in a while. Tonight he's in a 15K NW2 claimer with a purse of 10K and a full field. 5 54

Cuts Like a Knife - 4-year-old QH colt - Due to be gelded in the very near future, why I keep holding off, I don't know. He's in a 100K listed stakes, seven horse field. I've stripped him of equipment to see if it makes any difference. Maybe he'll feel like running tonight. 3 60

It'sbiggerintexas - 2-year-old Appy colt - Second start, third first time out (stakes). I bought him, as a filler, for a little over $200 and he certainly has paid off that way. Tonight he's in another listed stakes for 50K , four horse field, two winners in here.

Eris - 7-year-old chase mare - Her record is 12:3-2-2 chasing, she usually chokes in the stakes but there aren't always allowances for her to run in. Tonight is one of those nights. She is a 50K listed stakes, eight horse field. 7 58

First Extreme - 2-year-old dirt sprint filly - Second start, was second first time out (56), tonight she's in a 12K MSW, ten horse field. There's a few others that look as good or better so hoping she shows some improvement. 7 38

Somehow I have 35 running tonight. I have quite a few 2-year-olds running and some others that I'm trying to decide whether to keep or not.

A Friend of Mine - 3-year-old AW route gelding - This is his third AW race, he's come in fourth twice and I'm trying him at a longer distance to see if he just wants more ground. I may try him again on dirt if he doesn't do well here. 15K MSW, seven horse field. 1 61

Abacus - 3-year-old dirt route gelding - He just had a fairly long ship so not sure how he'll do but since he's running as a filler I guess it won't matter too much. 20K MSW, four horse field. 2 54

Arctic Heat - 2-year-old dirt mile colt - Homebred with good works, may prefer routes but breaking him in at a mile. 15K MSW with a full field. 2 61

Barefoot Dancer - 2-year-old dirt sprint filly - Second start, came in fourth in her first outing in a listed stakes. She may very well prefer a mile but in the mean time she's earning her money in sprint stakes. Tonight it's a 100K Grade 3 stakes, four horse field and there's one other maiden in the field. 4 45

Broado - 4-year-old turf route filly - She hasn't done very much in her two starts since I bought her for $1 and I was going to get rid of her a few times but just haven't done it yet. Aces High - 6-year-old chase gelding - Has six OTB finishes out of nine starts, three wins but struggles in stakes. He's running in a 65K Grade 3 stakes, five horse field.

*It's been an interesting week so far. I was happy to see that one of Midnight Tornado's foals "Tornado Fury" owned by Regina Moore, a colt out of her mare Kenora made it into Tanitha Starlett's top 20 fastest working trotter yearlings with a time of 1:55.30.

*There was a big Steward-bred auction last night that I got shut out of. I was a little disappointed but not too much as most of the ones I really liked were going for higher prices than I wanted to pay, plus I paid enough in the last one to last me through a few of the auctions. They'll be another one opening in a little over nine days anyway.


*Mixed breed racing night! 23 running tonight, there should be a lot of fillers in here as there seemed to be a lot of small fields for tonights races.

Amal - 6-year-old Arabian mare - She has eight starts and only one third place finish, unimpressive is an understatement, I guess. Tonight she's running in a 25K sponsored NW5, four horse field. 4 13

Muzelmien - 4-year-old Arabian gelding - First start for me, a recent $2 purchase that galloped with wings, for what that's worth. I've stripped him of all equipment except the lasix since he's been running with it for a while. I think this is probably not his preferred distance but want to see what he does. Painters Palette - 3-year-old Paint filly - CAH - Second start, created her to run in a two horse race last out, which she won with a dismal SF of 49. Tonight she's in a sponsored 25K NW2 at a different distance, but again, two horse field. Don't think she'll win this route race as she is bred to be a sprinter, but she'll still bring home a decent check. 1 44

Rhodonite - 5-year-old Arabian mare - Second start for me, bought for $1, made 1K in her first start for me, galloped with wings but still a maiden after 10 starts. She's running in a sponsored 25K MSW, four horse field. 2 60

Star of Tomorrow - 4-year-old QH filly - CAH - Just created her this week to run in this sponsored 200K Grade 1 stakes, four horse field. She's the only maiden, there's one horse that has won once, a monster and another pretty good filly. 4 45

The Cutting Edge - 2-year-old QH colt - My lone QH homebred who galloped with wings but finished sixth in his first start. Tonight he's running in a 10K NW2 at a longer distance, two horse field. The other horse is a first time starter with a slightly better work. He can't do worse than second here anyway. 2 63

Already a quarter of the way through the year! 27 running tonight, there weren't too many filler races for tonight so I have quite a few in fuller fields than I usually run them, so I'm a little anxious about that. I feel like I'm throwing some of these horses to the wolves. Oh well, they need the exercise, anyway.

Aces High - 6-year-old chase gelding - He's hit the board six times in eight starts, three of those times he made it to the winners circle. He's running tonight in a small 50K listed stakes, six horse field. His only two off the board chase finishes were both in his only stakes attempts so I'm not holding out a lot of hope for him to hit the board here. So far his best SF has only been 90. 5 76

Adonais - 3-year-old filly - Filler running in a 12K AW allowance, four horse field. Trying lasix for the first time. 4 39

Big Guns - 3-year-old gelding - Lightly raced, running for the first time on AW in a 12K MSW, eight horse field. It's also the longest he's ever run. 1 60

Dirie - 4-year-old dirt mile filly - Second start for me, broke her maiden last out at a mile. I put her in this 30K claimer in a full field without noticing that there were only two other fillies in the field. I doubt she can cut it with the boys, also, she hasn't raced since week 11 of last year. This will probably be a throwaway race for her due to me not paying attention. 11 26

Drop Out - 2-year-old filly - Just bought her for $100 because I wanted to try her out on AW, tonight she's running in a 15K MSW, full field, there's a few first time starters in the field, otherwise it's all struggling babies. 8 15

Forever in Gold - 3-year-old turf route filly - She's running in a 10K allowance at a very long route with a full field, she's probably outclassed here but I decided to just let her run to see if she shows anything with the long route. 12 19
